Time Tracking
Where to find it: Sidebar > Work > Time
Time tracking is how Cherp connects your work to projects and billing. Every hour you log is tied to a specific task, which connects it to a deliverable and project.
Three Ways to Log Time
| Method | Best For |
|---|---|
| Calendar View | Visual entry on a weekly grid — click a time slot, set duration |
| Manual Entry & Timer | Entering a duration directly, or using a real-time timer |
| Workload Completion | Logging time when completing a work item on the Workload Planner |
All three methods use the same Task Selector to choose which task you’re logging time against.
What Gets Tracked
Each time entry records:
- Task — Which task (and therefore which deliverable and project) this time is for
- Duration — How long you worked
- Date — When the work happened
- Notes — Optional description of what you did
- Billable flag — Whether the time is billable (defaults to yes for client work)
Backfill Time (Managers)
Managers have access to Backfill Time, which supports bulk retrospective time entry. This is useful for catching up on a past week. You can select multiple tasks and use allocation sliders to distribute hours across them.
In Personal Mode, the user selector and Backfill Time link are hidden on the Time page.
Tips
- Log time daily if you can — it’s much more accurate than trying to reconstruct a week from memory
- The Task Selector learns your habits — frequently used tasks appear at the top over time
- If you see a “Closed” badge on a task, it means the deliverable is complete. You can still log time to it, but the badge is a heads-up that the work is officially done
